December 2022
The following report contains updates on the current trends in production and availability of the most in-demand Essential Oils and Carrier Oils sourced from around the globe.
Tansy Blue Essential Oil
Tansy Blue Essential Oil is steam distilled from the Tanacetum annuum L. flowers grown in Morocco and is sometimes known as True Moroccan Chamomile. Blue Tansy's harvesting season begins in June and lasts until October. Originally, Blue Tansy is classified as a wild grown species, however, due to several years of drought, the wild varieties harvested have become scarcer. This crop thrives in dry and sunny Mediterranean weather and sandy soil.
Currently, the market demand for Tansy Blue Essential Oil is about 4 tons annually. This year's harvest yield is expected to be lower than the previous year by 25-30%. The American market is still dominating the demand for Tansy Blue Oil; however, this product is now experiencing an resurgence in demand from the Asian market.
Sage Dalmatian Essential Oil
Sage Dalmatian Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves of the Salvia officinalis plant grown in Hungary. The crop is planted in field soil or brown forest soil, and harvests between August and September. The ideal weather conditions for Sage Dalmatian are predictable irrigations that do not exceed above 35 degrees Celsius. It does not thrive well in heavy rainfall.
The growing conditions for Sage Dalmatian are favorable and the harvest yield is expected to be around the same as last year's. Since demand has increased for this product, there is only a limited variety of conventional Sage Dalmatian Oil, and organic varieties are entirely sold out for the remainder of the year.
Pine Scotch Essential Oil
Pine Scotch Essential Oil is steam distilled from the Pinus sylvestris needles and twigs grown in Hungary. Harvest season occurs in early spring and in autumn. The crop typically thrives in sour soil types, but is adaptable and can grow in almost every soil type, as long as it receives an abundance of rainwater. There are currently no known issues with cultivation of Pinus sylvestris.
The Russia-Ukraine War has increased the demand of Pine Scotch Oil since customers opted to order Pine Scotch Oil instead of Siberian Fir Needle Oil. Compared to last year's crop, this year's harvest yield is expected to be lower. The orders and reservations for Pine Scotch Oil are outweighing the supply, causing the prices to increase.
Ginger Root Essential Oil – Fresh
The Zingiber officinale root is macerated while fresh and distilled over high heat to extract Ginger Root Essential Oil. It is planted in Indonesia during the rainy season in fertile, loose, and slightly sandy soil that makes it easier to harvest. Ginger is harvested every 11-12 months during the dry season of June to September. Temperatures between 20 and 35 degrees Celsius are ideal for ginger to thrive.
Currently, there are no known issues with harvesting or crop size. Output is projected to be relatively stable.
Walnut Carrier Oil – RBD
Walnut Carrier Oil is cold pressed from the Juglans regia nuts and is refined, bleached, and deodorized for cosmetic purposes. Harvesting season occurs during autumn, beginning at the end of September and continuing until December. The Walnut tree is rustic, requiring rain in the winter without freezing, as well as moderately warm temperatures in the summer.
The main sourcing of Walnut Oil is in California and Eastern Europe. The new harvest is projected to be slightly lower than previous years, while the price is expected to remain stable. Due to the economic climate, a slight decrease in demand is anticipated.
Ricebran Carrier Oil – RBDW
Rice Bran Carrier Oil is extracted from the bran of the Oryza sativa using the solvent extraction method, and is refined, bleached, deodorized, and winterized for cosmetic purposes. Rice Bran is cultivated in India, where it thrives in hot and humid climates. Harvest occurs between October and November, and clay or clay loams are the preferred soil types for this crop.
The current growing conditions for Rice Bran are favorable and the projected harvest yield is expected to remain the same compared to that of last year's. The domestic market for this carrier oil has increased slightly.
Rosehip Carrier Oil - RBDW
Rosehip Carrier Oil is one of our best-selling carrier oils due to its essential fatty acid and Vitamin C content, making it a staple in skin care formulations for mature skin. This exquisite oil is cold pressed from the Rosa canina seeds grown in Chile and is refined, bleached, deodorized, and winterized for cosmetic purposes. The Rosehip seeds are planted in low clay soils and are harvested between December and April. This crop adapts better to Andean climates with a wide thermal oscillation.
Currently, the growing conditions for Rosehip are optimum. Since it is a wild crop, there is no record of projected harvest yield. The market demand for Rosehip Carrier Oil is 300 ton, and the demand in the European market is expected to increase by 2023.
