February 2023
The following report contains updates on the current trends in production and availability of the most in-demand Essential Oils and Carrier Oils sourced from around the globe.
Clary Sage Essential Oil (France)
Known for its herbaceous aroma balanced by sweet floral notes, Clary Sage Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowers of the Salvia sclarea L. tree grown in France. The crop is planted in clay-limestone soils with adequate drainage, and is harvested in June. Clary Sage thrives in the Mediterranean climate, which includes hot and dry summers, cold and dry winters, and rainy periods in the spring and in the autumn. 400mm of rain per year is required for adequate growth. Currently, the climate conditions are very poor due to the lack of water and infestation of the 2022 harvest. The projected harvest yield has decreased by 70% since last year. Since the war in the Ukraine, the demand for Clary Sage Essential Oil has increased and is currently stable. Due to low stocks, the price is still high.
Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oil
Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of the Eucalyptus radiata tree grown in South Africa. Harvest season begins in January and ends in March. Eucalyptus Radiata grows best in deep, well drained loams and forestry soils, and are supported by cool summers with generous rainfall. The current growing conditions are favorable with above average rainfall. The harvest yield is projected to reach a similar crop size to that of last year. Regarding the market conditions for Eucalyptus Radiata Oil, the supply falls short of the demand, resulting in notably higher prices. The demand remains high, although it is subtly lower than that of last year.
Eucalyptus Globulus 80/85% Essential Oil
Eucalyptus Globulus Essential Oil is steam distilled from the woods and leaves of the Eucalyptus globulus tree grown in China. Harvest season takes place between October and February, and growing conditions are determined by the climatic characteristics of Yunnan, a subtropical monsoon climate. This includes no distinct wet and dry seasons, large temperature differences between morning and night, and long sunshine hours. The Eucalyptus Globulus tree thrives in acidic red soil and requires an average year-round temperature of above 15 degrees Celsius.
The current market conditions for Eucalyptus Globulus Essential Oil remain unclear. The yield dropped significantly due to the raw material price decrease in 2022. While the market demand experienced a significant decline in 2022, it is expected to recover in 2023.
Eucalyptus Blue Mallee Essential Oil
Eucalyptus Blue Mallee Essential Oil is steam distilled from the woods and leaves of the Eucalyptus polybractea tree grown in Perth, Western Australia. Harvesting takes place between May and June and occurs again between November and December. The Eucalyptus polybractea tree is planted in sandy soil and thrives best in dry and sunny weather conditions, with limited but sufficient rainfall. Currently, the growing conditions are favorable, and yields are stable at 1.5-2.5% with an expectation to increase.
Jojoba Golden Organic Carrier Oil
Known for its liquid wax texture and rich emollient properties, Jojoba Carrier Oil is a staple in the skin care, hair care, and natural beauty industries. It is cold pressed from the seeds of the Simmondsia chinensis tree grown in Israel. The Jojoba tree is planted in desert sand and thrives in dry weather conditions, and is harvested between September and November. The harvest yield for Jojoba Carrier Oil is expected to be 20% greater than that of last year's, while the market demand experiences a 10% increase annually. The market conditions continue to be favorable as Jojoba Carrier Oil remains a staple in the personal care industry.
Evening Primrose Carrier Oil (Unrefined)
Evening Primrose Carrier Oil is luxurious emollient rich in gamma linoleic acid, omega 3, and omega 6 fatty acids. It is cold pressed from the seeds of the Oenothera biennis flower grown in China. Farmers sow the seeds in the spring and harvest the crop between September and October. Evening Primrose thrives in neutral, slightly alkaline, or acidic soils and partly cloudy weather conditions. The projected harvest yield is expected to remain the same as that of last year. The market demand is stable for Evening Primrose Carrier Oil, while the price is expected to decrease slightly.
