Essential Oils containing Chamazulene

Chamazulene: This constituent is a derivative of plants such as Chamomile and Yarrow. It is an aromatic compound that has a deep blue color. The “-azulene” part of its name was given to it based on its blue color and the “Cha” was given to it due to it being first discovered in Chamomile. Although azulene usually occurs naturally in plants, Chamazulene is a consequence of the heat and pressure of steam distillation. Essential oils with this constituent will be blue or violet in color when new. Once they pass this peak freshness, their color will change to dark green and then finally become yellow with age.
